Description

Every January 8th, thousands of devotees fill a roadside shrine located just a few kilometers from the city of Mercedes, in Corrientes. It is said that on that day, and in that very place, Antonio Gil was executed in 1878. A rebellious gaucho turned folk saint, he now sustains the hope of a fervent people who ask, promise, and give thanks year after year.

Dagurke joins this celebration and finds a festival of red images: of sweat-soaked bodies and piercing gazes; of messages tattooed on skin, prayers printed on flags, and plaster figures protected by plastic wrap; of chamamé, raised glasses, and cries of sapucai. Throughout a day in which candles melt and fuse into one another, it becomes undeniable that faith—like joy and like struggle—gains strength when it is shared.
